The School
Laycock School is a large inner city primary school with just over 300 pupils, housed in a Victorian building located in Islington. The works form part of a ongoing phased refurbishment of substantial parts of the school.
Phase 1 works have included the construction of a new timber clad extension to the rear of the school to provide a new hall and main kitchen as well as new WC and disabled WCs. The existing hall has been rebuilt into new classrooms and the remaining ground floor classrooms refurbished.
Kitchen
A large proportion of pupils qualify for subsidised school meals and the school has gained a Healthy Schools award. The refurbishment works have sought to build on this and have provided a fully operational commercial cooking kitchen.
Heating
Underfloor heating has been installed throughout the new rear extension. The school's existing boilers, which were converted from coal to gas approximately 30 years ago, have been replaced with new high efficiency condensing boilers together with all associated pumps and controls.
Environment
An environmentally friendly green roof was installed on the new extension. Large areas of glass ensure good daylighting and winter solar gain, while solar shading and specialist coatings on some windows prevent summertime overheating. Urinals have PIR sensors to control flushing and conserve water.
